Web based control panels are one of the best innovations in the web hosting industry. They are the best way to perform some tasks without needing any specific technical knowledge. However, there are few tasks which cannot be easily performed using the web based control panels such as bulk file management.
Managing multiple files is a kind of hassle and slower which requires to navigate via different directories, especially, if you are running your own Linux based dedicated server and hosting multiple domains on it. In such case, using the file manager through control panel could be trouble. Fortunately, there is a quick method into your dedicated server to make you hassle free using the SSH (Secure SHell).
If you wish to remove multiple files using the command line in a Linux operating system, simply you can use the “rm” command, where “rm” stands for “remove”. In order to remove one single file using the rm command, run the following command:
Using the above command, it will prompt you to make a choice of going ahead or back out. If you want to skip the back out process, simply add the “-f” flag to the command to proceed without confirmation.
If you want to delete the whole directory, enter the following command:
rm -rf directory
In the above command “-r” stands for “recursive”, it means it will delete entire directory as well as contents inside it.
If you wish to remove selected files only, you will have to type each filename seprating them with a single space:
rm file1.jpg file2.jpg file3.jpg file4.jpg
In you want to remove all the files from a working directory, you need to enter the directory and run the following command:
Files with specific extensions can be removed using the following command:
or you can remove a file containing a specific word such as:
Things which could be performed using the “rm” command are not limited to the above. While playing with the “rm” command you need to make sure that you are using the right commands as deleting files using “rm” command will permanently remove the files from your dedicated server and cannot be recovered.
